NIGERIA'S APPROACH TOWARDS EDUCATION

NIGERIA'S APPROACH TOWARDS EDUCATION Students intelligence are restricted to the six questions the examiner is going to ask in fact question one might be bagging 150 marks. Maybe the student's strength is actually located in the part of the syllabus the lecturer didn't even touch in the questions Then that student automatically becomes a dullard(?) That's not the end, Our law course here in Lagos state university (lasu) for example is five (5) good years! Plus law school =six (6) years Almost all the years the student is suppose to be building his or her potential(s) Then after graduation a Nigerian employer will be asking a student of 26 years for 30 years of experience has the student been studying since he/ she was a zygote? No doubt, the employer(s) is indirectly telling us "Nigerian youth(s) are unemployable after almost fourteen years of leaving our lives pursuing the societal DUTY (education) The secret of the developed country is their undivided attention towards education. Any developed country you can think of, education is surely their power point and that's the sector in which Nigeria is crude about. We need to do things right We need to apply systems that best suit us, and if we want to adapt, we need to do it correctly It is So Saddening When Nigerian Lecturers Happily Tell Their Student "To get into University Of Ibadan is Harder than Harvard" Why does it have to be so? (This Origin of Western Education is not even Nigeria) Must their Be Hardship just to Prove Success when one can Simply Do things which are meant to be simple in a simple way So if it was hard for "Them" during their era must it be Hard for the rest of the generation ? in that case, students are left with seeing hardship as a measurement for success or even as one of the good criteria to spot a good university a situation where students starts having arguments like ‘’mtcheew! see this one, na U.I hard pass’’, ‘’come to LASU if you think U.I is hard’’ Then There is The Issue Of a State having just 2 or 3 Universities whereby a university will be having 61,000 students. How do we expect Lecturers to mark scripts with optimum scrutiny and attention? When he has about 2000 Theory Scripts to mark? Imagine a Situation where a State has 40 Universities? And Entrance Mode is not made to be a Draculian Task? Where all that is required is the adequate capabilty and percentage and where students are only about 10,000? Where Lecturers aren't bombarded with scripts . But in a situation where they are bombarded with it,they have no choice than to Play with a student's Life when Laziness sets in (This is a "DREAM" I hope can come true in my lifetime. If not during my schooling time, at least for those coming behind me) because NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM is a curse I wouldn’t want to place on anyone. the only set of people who are going to be bias about this obvious truth are the 1% that either didn’t school in Nigeria or those who gained scholarship out of the incompetence of the system because I don’t believe in ‘’ONE’’ over all best student in a university;the rests are what? back up singers? at least we hear of news where students that graduates with lower grades in Nigeria gets the upper hands abroad PROFESSOR WOLE SOYINKA is the popular example of that. this routine has been injurious to The Nigerian development as individual’s intelligence and capabilities is based on his/her academic profile in which one of his/her low marks might have been a mistake on the lecturer’s part and those who their academic profile pronounced a guru might have been sheer luck(not all situations but at least 6 out of 10) I Feel An Individual's "INTELLIGENCE " shouldn't be Based on "WESTERN EDUCATION " to a very LARGE extent as Nigeria Treats it Definition of a Successful Youth is Only Those that has seen the Four corners of a university An undergraduate studying Computer Science @ Year 3 might not even know a NanoTech is or how to completely disengage and arrange a computer But to average Nigerians Such Student is SUCCESSFUL more than a Fellow youth who has have the full Knowledge of the Nature o Computer from a roadside engineer At this Youthful age where Youths should have liberty of choosing Potential over Education, that's the exact stage A high level of pressure is on such youth to be in an institution (you must come home with a certificate -attitude) even I there Is no Job waiting, the years one would have used in building potentials.. Just Recently, Lagos State University (LASU) was been condemned for selling forms to over 30,000 aspirants and admitting only 3,000. Many said LASU has killed the future of many youths Future is now based on getting admission or not Success to the Nigerian society is Going into University for years only for you to graduate and see that the Nigerian society doesn't have a job for your field of study, so much for success Would their have been so much agitation on the Lasu admission list if the society has made them know that there is something called potential or personal intelligence? Would a youth have thought of committing suicide because he/she didn't get admitted and knowing that his/her family will them on the basis that such youth has FAILED IN LIFE?if his society's orientation acknowledges inbuilt intelligence? FAILED IN LIFE? What's your definition of failure? In fact, according to UNESCO : “Youth” is best understood as a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood’s independence and awareness of our interdependence as members of a community. Youth is a more fluid category than a fixed age-group. However, age is the easiest way to define this group, particularly in relation to education and employment. Therefore “youth” is often indicated as a person between the age where he/she may leave compulsory education, and the age at which he/she finds his/her first employment It seems despite our "INDEPENDENCE " we are still enslaved by their "SOFT POWER". It is not by magic that, According to us Anybody who doesn't have a WESTERN EDUCATION Is automatically an ILLITERATE When I hear Some Western or eastern brainwashed People whose ideology has been caged say things like "Hiaan! Northerners! They are too backward & illiterate combined" I know automatically they are talking about Western Education, But is that the right Guage for Intelligence? Or A Cage of Potential? , Many People Who Claim "We don't Build Our Culture" Have already been enslaved By this Ideology Unconsciously "An individual can sure smoke his/her garri with a ruler, no one will blame him/her or scold such individual, but the individual will know optimum satisfaction when he/she uses the right TOOL (spoon)" We can see from various education system of these westerners that formal education is a PLUS= we know there is an intelligence in there we cherish TRY including a formal education , but here in Nigeria, it is MUST= to hell with your inner intelligence, you've not seen the four corners of a university equals you are worthless Students in Nigeria are treated like PRESSURE COOKER who are expected to act like PROGRAMMED ROBOT (anything you know outside the SYLLABUS is your own cup of tea, just give me back the marking scheme and you are a SCHOLAR) Then after a Nigerian "Youth" must have gone through the pain of performing his/her societal duty (Western Education) , there is now the ultimate crime of comparing him/her to an Hoodlum Because whenever a political fight erupts the "Supposed" elders blames the "Youth" and it gets Me wondering what is their definition of YOUTH? The ones who chants "Baba oh! Behind politicians and sleeps in the streets smoking marijuana? Or the ones who are under Pressure to write the next impromptu test and doesn't even have time for campaigning for their freedom let aside a politician? Why do they(the supposed elders) keep interchangeably translating the meaning of Hoodlum for the Ideal Youth? Maybe they needed to point fingers to clear their own faults? Or maybe most of them are just Kleptocrats and not democrats? Who needs to Find an excuse as to why they think the leadership of nigeria is their inherited title or birthright We all should amend and help Each other Instead of dragging each other down in all aspects (because, I FEEL the way the Nigerian education is being practiced, it is designed to waste the potentials of the YOUTHS and delay their PROGRESS) Because if we don't help each other, nobody will do it for us. Not even the several Foreign relations we involve in because those are just GAME THEORY (and this connotes both parties doing things for their own interest) Western Education didn't originate from Nigeria, and if we want to COPY then we have to do it RIGHT Like Really!? Do western Education have to be The Gauge for Literacy? And Intelligence? If we can be Called Illiterate for not knowing how to speak their Language, we can rightly call them the same for not knowing how to speak ours ©Edu Ziyadah Oluwafunmylola
